The Space Farce, or "How to fail at Space Travel without really trying"

What is a "Space Force"?   Well, let's analyze it, shall we?  First, and foremost, Space is big.  We know this, from science fiction and whatever science shows we might have seen over the decades.  It's going to require Ships, to explore, much as the Oceans did, centuries ago.  Having reached this point, how should we design and build these ships?  Perhaps a few thousand years of experience building ocean going ships might come in handy.  It's certain that we don't have the technology to build even a small Cog or Cartel, in terms of transport and supply, but a rowboat might be possible.  Building a "space-going" Aircraft Carrier is so far beyond our current technology as to be in the realm of 'pure speculation' among scientists.     Now we see the crux of the problem.  We need power, supplies, life support, shields, and perhaps some form of living quarters on even the simplest vessel.  Say a billion dollars to invent a power source, what

A Travelogue of Thoss.

The World of Thoss If you want to lose yourself, in a world of magic, Dragons, and fantastic creatures, then Thoss is the Place to visit.  From the ancient ruins of the Great Library, on the Western Coast of ‘Oldhome’, to the Great Mountains, which encircle the planet, and on to Newhome, where the entire civilization is like a giant Renaissance faire,  There is much to be seen. To the far South of Oldhome, are the ‘Lands of the Khan’, which are unlike any place you have seen, or read about. There you will find culture that slightly mirrors the historical Orient, but not really.  There is magic there, but not the overt use which is seen in Newhome. The people in the lands of the Khan try to live much as did their ancestors on Earth.   Yes, the population of Thoss is from Earth.  The tale is odd, but easily explained. There was a wormhole, into which, in the near future, a shipload of colonists journeyed.  They were seeking a place to live out their fantasies, as medieval pla

The stories of Samovar

The stories of Samovar 1. Growing up in the Dark    The sun rose, not that anyone knew of it, in the realm of the 'Dark Elves'.  Day and night were simply conventions there, far below the surface of Newhome, where lived those who had lost access to the bright, upper world.  It had been thousands of years since the passages from 'below' to 'above' were closed by the cataclysm. Almost everyone died, in that event, and those who survived were faced with a harsh life.  Food was scarce, and water was often unclean. Only the pale microorganisms which gave light were available, for many decades. Eating them was unhealthy, but not fatal.     Gradually, those trapped in the darkness were able to locate the magical houses that made food.  Not many of the dwellings survived, but those which did were a Godsend. Over time, some of the magical light sources renewed, and the microscopic plants, that made light, flourished.  In less than a thousand years, the un
